Chicago Native Jim Schmid Takes Home Crown as ReedPOP Unveils International Cosplay Circuit to Hit France, China, India and Australia in 2015
CHICAGO – April 26, 2015 – In front of a capacity crowd of super fans, cosplay enthusiasts, and celebrity judgeson Saturday night, ReedPOP, the world’s leading producer of pop culture events and Wikia, the social universe for fandom and the ultimate source for powerful and relevant pop culture, entertainment and game expertise, named the winner of the 2015 C2E2 Crown Championships of Cosplay. Chicago native Jim Schmid dressed as Groot wowed the audience and judges before walking away with $10,000 in cash and prizes as he claimed the top spot as the Crown Champion of Cosplay. In the midst of the celebration ReedPOP announced the expansion of its Cosplay competition circuit to include its global portfolio of Cons in France, China, India and Australia.
Thousands of C2E2 fans watched in person while others from around the world and even inside the Convention Center tuned in via the official C2E2 Livestream to cheer on their favorite cosplayers as they vied for the Crown. For the first time ever, the C2E2 Crown Championships of Cosplay featured the regional Eastern Champion from New York Comic Con as everyone battled in front of celebrity judges – Ann Foley (costume designer for “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Neville Page (film and television creature and concept designer), and Ivy Doomkitty (international costumer/cosplayer, host, artist, gamer, and figure model). It was a fun-filled competition that celebrated and showcased the spectacle, pageantry, skill and determination of the best cosplayers in the world. All entries had to represent a character or element from Comic Books, Movies & Television, Video Games or Anime & Fantasy.
“This was an amazing event and the perfect venue to reveal our larger plans for the growing cosplay community and our international competition circuit,” said Lance Fensterman, Global Senior Vice President of ReedPOP. “As much as cosplay is on the map, we’re going to make it a true global movement connected through a global competition circuit across all of our Cons that culminates in Chicago at the Crown Championships of Cosplay.”
“Cosplay is such an amazing next-level tribute to fandom, and our many pop-culture communities on Wikia love the fantastic level of cosplay seen at C2E2, both in Chicago and at the event online. The spirit and passion we saw this weekend really is what we are all about, so partnering with ReedPOP to make this happen has proven to be really mutually beneficial,” added Annette Cardwell, Director of Lifestyle Programming at Wikia.
