In an interesting development, Capcom’s latest iteration in its famous fighting game series, Ultra Street Fighter IV, will be part of an upcoming event known as the World eSports Championship Games. It is the only fighting game listed in the event’s official lineup, which also includes other games like Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Hearthstone.
I’m pretty excited to hear about this, as I feel that fighting games haven’t been given their due lately. Even with big events like the Evolution Championship Series, the recently-concluded Capcom Pro Tour, and even the somewhat shoddy attempts by Major League Gaming, longevity for the genre tends to be mired by things like steep learning curves for select games and certain attitudes among successful members of the FGC (fighting game community) as we know it. The placement of what is inarguably the most popular game of its genre in a legitimate eSports environment might be the true push competitive players were waiting for.
This should be an interesting event to watch, come December. For more information regarding the event, check out wecg.com.
